Types Of Poem.

So, to begin with, lets get the simple stuff out of the way. There are 4 main types of poem. These are: Ballads, Lyrics, Odes and Sonnets.

Ballads:
A Ballad is narrative type of poem that's focus is a story.
Example:Edgar Allan Poe's, 'Annabel Lee'.







Lyrics:
A Lyric is a poem that's focus is on thoughts and feelings.
Example: Emily Dickinson's, 'I Felt A Funeral In My Brain'.





Odes:
An Ode is a poem of tribute.
Example: John Keats', 'Ode To A Nightengale'.



Sonnets:
A Sonnet is a poem that develops a single topic.
Example: Shakespeare's, 'Sonnet 130'.







Haikus are also another well-known type of poem. These are a Japanese type of poem made up of 17 syllables and are generally known for being about nature. Matsuo Basho is a famous Haiku poet.
