Welcome To Art In Writing.

Hi there :) my name is Elizabeth Baker, and that's my chihuahua Spartacus.

I created this blog whilst studying my A levels (English Literature, Sociology & Media Studies). Since then I have completed a BTEC in Photography, and am now studying a Bachelors Degree in English Literature, with the hopes of becoming a teacher.

The aim of this blog is to help people learn all about English, whether you're studying it or you're just a #WordNerd like me. I aim to provide you with the facts that I have learnt throughout my English studies, from fascinating profiles of famous and lesser known poets, to help analysing poems, to information about literature throughout history.

I love English Literature (and all other literatures for that matter) because I love the historical context of a book. I want to know what made a certain novel go down in history as a masterpiece, why was it so revolutionary for its time? Author's lives are so interesting as they are often bursting with political views, arguing for freedom and rights, going into hiding, exile and sometimes even execution by the state for what they are trying to preach!

I have entitled this blog 'Art In Writing' because the definition of art is: "the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination.....producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power." (Oxford English Dictionary)

This definition applies to paintings, sculptures, novels and poems alike. Anything that is an expression of human emotion is art. Millie Brown is an artist who vomited on Lady Gaga for a project, so I'm sure writing a little poem can be seen as art too! Throughout my life, I've found that poetry is very underrated. No one is interested in it any more. People go to art museums to see paintings, photos and sculptures, but no one really thinks about poetry any more. Perhaps this is because there isn't really any money in poetry nowadays, it is a labour of love.

I love poems because they are a way of expressing emotions that are too strong to be said out loud. They are like mini-diaries that the poet can confide in and share their deepest thoughts and feelings.

At the end of the day, that's pretty beautiful.
